December 21, 1947 — July 9, 2026
Arthur Nelson Lankford, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on December 21, 1947, in Eatonton, Georgia, Arthur was the son of the late Cramer Nelson Lankford and Mary Lou Ward Lankford. His life's journey was marked by dedication, service, and immense love for his family.
Arthur was a proud graduate of Putnam County High School, class of 1968, and soon after, he answered the call of duty by serving his country in the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army. His service was a testament to his courage and commitment to protecting and serving others.
Following his military service, Arthur dedicated over three decades of his life to Georgia Power/Southern Company, where he worked as a civil engineer. His colleagues often spoke of his innovative mind and unwavering work ethic. Arthur's natural ability to mend and create led to the family saying, "If Papa can't fix it, no one can fix it," a testament to his resourcefulness and skill.
A man of faith, Arthur was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Warrenton, Georgia. His commitment to his community and his faith was evident in the kindness and generosity he extended to everyone he met. He found joy in life's simple pleasures, particularly fishing, which provided him with both solitude and connection with nature. An enthusiastic lottery player, Arthur was known for his hopeful spirit and the excitement he found in life's possibilities.
Arthur was predeceased by his parents, his son John Keith Lankford, his brother Ennis Lankford, and his sister Dorothy Lankford Epps. His legacy continues through his surviving children: Matthew Lankford Lyon (Michelle), Anita L. Butler (Jeff), Shonda Allen (Shane), and Maggie Ruvalcaba (Jose). He was a cherished grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Matthew Lyon, James Lyon, Daniel Butler, Meredith Butler, Alyssa Brown (Andrew), Deanna Allen, Austin Ferrell, Michael Allen, Caden Allen, Emma Putnam, Jackson Putnam, and Cheyenne Medina. His joy was further multiplied with the presence of his two great-grandchildren, Colton Brown and Daylen Milstead.
Arthur is also survived by his brothers, Ennis Lankford (Caroline) and Richard Lankford, along with numerous nieces and nephews who were dear to his heart. His family was the center of his world, and he took great pride in their achievements, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams with the same passion he lived his life.
