Aris Janis Birze

July 1, 1948 — April 7, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Aris Janis Birze, whose vibrant spirit and generous heart left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Aris passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 77, following a tragic accident. Born on July 1, 1948, in Germany, Aris was the cherished son of Leopolds and Milda Birze. Aris grew up in a household rich with love and tradition, alongside his brothers, Ervin and Talivaldis, and cousin, Gunnars Liepins, all of whom have predeceased him. Aris’s early years were filled with the warmth and strength of his family, laying the foundation for a life of kindness and generosity. A bright and dedicated student, Aris pursued higher education at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1971. His academic achievements were a source of pride for his family and a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Aris was a man of diverse interests and passions. An avid runner, he found joy and solace in the rhythm of his steps, embracing numerous sports throughout his life. His love for collecting was matched only by his appreciation for the beauty and history each item held—his collections of coins, stamps, and handcrafted glass, pottery, and fabric art were admired by many. These treasures were often shared as thoughtful gifts, each piece a testament to his eye for detail and his love for those he cared about. Though Aris did not have children of his own, he was a beloved uncle to his nieces, Arija Birze, Vanessa Birze, Elizabeth Spear, and Melanie Birze Cargill. His legacy of love and generosity extends to his great-nieces and nephews: Victoria Blohm, Echo Leigh Spear, Bobbie Spear, D’Artagne Cargill, Elliott Vander Heyden, Scarlet Vander Heyden, and Navy Birze Hockley. Aris played a significant role in their lives, always ready with a kind word, a listening ear, and a heart full of love. Aris’s memory will be honored in a celebration of his life on June 20, 2026, at the Latvian Cultural Centre. The service will commence at 11:30 a.m., where family and friends will gather to remember a man whose life was marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Aris’s memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his belief in giving and supporting those in need. Aris’s absence leaves a profound void, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, remembered always for his warmth, his generosity, and his unwavering love for his family and friends.
