Aretha Johnson
June 15, 1946 — May 27, 2026
With profound sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Aretha Johnson, who departed this life on May 27, 2026, at DCH in the company of her cherished family. Born on June 15, 1946, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Aretha's journey through life was a testament to love, faith, and unwavering devotion to family and community.
Daughter to the late Essie and Rufus Johnson, Aretha grew up embraced by a nurturing family that instilled in her the values of kindness, resilience, and steadfast faith. These values guided her throughout her 79 years, enriching the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
Aretha's life was a tapestry woven with love and commitment, both to her family and her faith. A devoted mother, she is survived by her cherished daughter, Anita Diaz, who was the light of her life. Her legacy continues through her three adored grandchildren, Shondrelle Sanders, LaDarious Sanders, and Iyana Diaz, who brought immense joy and pride to her days. Aretha's sisters, Irene and Ida Johnson, remain as pillars of strength, carrying forward the cherished memories and love they shared.
A cornerstone of the Tuscaloosa community, Aretha was a dedicated member of Saint Paul Baptist Church for over 80 years. Her faith was unwavering, and her presence a comforting constant within the church community, where she found joy and purpose.
Aretha's passions were simple yet profound. She found immense pleasure in her church activities, relishing in the fellowship and spiritual growth they provided. She was also known for her love of "her stories," those beloved television programs that brought a smile to her face, and her fondness for long, heartfelt conversations on the phone, a testament to her deep connection with family and friends.
Though Aretha is predeceased by her parents and her dear son, her love and spirit endure in the hearts of those she leaves behind. The family has chosen to honor her life with a private ceremony, allowing them to reflect on the beautiful memories and the impact she had on so many.
As we celebrate Aretha's life, the family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, support, and kindness shown during this time of loss. Your presence and compassion have been a source of comfort and strength, reminding us of the boundless love that Aretha shared with the world.
In remembrance of Aretha Johnson, we thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support during this difficult time. Your presence has been a beacon of hope and solace, and we are deeply grateful for the love you have shown.
May Aretha rest in eternal peace, her spirit forever embraced by the love she so generously shared.
