With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Aretha Ann Stewart-Latney, a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and treasured friend, who left this world peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the age of 57. Born on December 13, 1968, in the heart of Salem County, New Jersey, Aretha's life was a tapestry of love, service, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Aretha was preceded in death by her dear parents, Laura M. Stewart and Robert Parrish; cherished son, Travis Stewart; and beloved sisters, Laura D. Stewart and Joanne Parrish. Though their absence pained her, their memories inspired and comforted her throughout her life.
She is survived by her loving husband, John Latney, with whom she shared a beautiful journey of love and partnership. Aretha's legacy continues through her children, Marcus and Asia, who were the light of her life. Her heart overflowed with pride and affection for her nine grandchildren: Lacyah Stewart, Serenity Robinson, Lidiae Delk, Elias Stewart-Jackson, Jeremiah Martin, Jayden Stewart, Justus Stewart, Jasmine Fendsand, and Dante Porter. Each grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with them.
Aretha also leaves behind a large and loving family, including her siblings: James Stewart of Delaware, Tara Stewart of Maryland, T. Terrille Stewart (Alsheka) of New Jersey, Shirley Holmes of Virginia, Laura Brown of Virginia, Linda Johnson (Jimmy) of Delaware, Robert Parrish (Alasa) of New Jersey, Brent Parrish of South Carolina, Melanie Parrish of Delaware, Preston Parrish of Delaware, and Lorraine Parrish of New Jersey. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends will remember her warmth, generosity, and unwavering support.
A proud graduate of Penngrove High School, class of 1987, Aretha's academic pursuits led her to a degree in forensic science, a field she was deeply passionate about. She loved watching shows like "CSI," "NCIS," and "Without a Trace," which fueled her interest in the subject. Her dedication to her studies was evident, as she completed her class assignments with diligence and took great pride in her achievements.
Aretha was a devoted member of the New Destiny Baptist Church, where she actively participated on the usher board and lent a helping hand wherever needed. Her church family was a source of joy and fulfillment, and she embraced every opportunity to serve and connect with others. Aretha treasured the fellowship of church trips and the lively conversations that followed.
Her culinary skills, especially her love for cooking and eating seafood, were legendary among her family and friends. Aretha also found joy in simple pleasures, like sitting outside with her neighbors, engaging in heartfelt conversations that enriched her life and those around her.
A service to celebrate Aretha's remarkable life will be held on June 11, 2026, at 12:00 PM at Agape Life Funeral Services, located at 2105 Emancipation Hwy. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the New Destiny Church Family and Agape Funeral Home for their compassionate support during this difficult time.
