Antonio Vargas Rodriguez, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on July 17, 2026, at the age of 72, following a valiant battle with cancer. Antonio was born on June 12, 1954, in Northbrook, Illinois, to the late Marcos and Maria Rodriguez. His life was a testament to resilience, service, and love for his family.
Antonio grew up in the vibrant Barrio community, known affectionately as "VAB." He attended Tubbs Elementary, Matthew's Middle School, and Lubbock High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and nurtured an enduring passion for learning and community involvement.
After graduating, Antonio answered the call to serve his country by joining the Marine Corps, where he distinguished himself as a dedicated and honorable veteran. His courage and commitment to service were hallmarks of his character, inspiring those around him.
Upon returning to civilian life, Antonio worked in a meat market in Amarillo before settling in Lubbock. He found joy and satisfaction working at Rooftop Cafe and Ana's Mexican Restaurant, where he was known for his hardworking spirit and warm smile. Over the years, Antonio retired from his role as a dishwasher, leaving behind a legacy of humility and dedication.
Antonio had a passion for movies, a penchant for indulging in ice cream and chocolate candy, and a knack for buying used cars and trucks to restore and sell. These hobbies were not just pastimes but avenues for joy and connection with others, especially his family, whom he cherished deeply.
He is survived by his two daughters, Chasity Deleon Rodriguez and Toni Marie Rodriguez, who were the pride and joy of his life. Antonio also leaves behind a loving family, including his sister Angelina Ramirez (Domingo), brothers Jose Rodriguez (Sophia), Johnny Rodriguez (Carol), and Armando Rodriguez. His legacy extends to his nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and laughter into his life. Additionally, he is fondly remembered by 11 nieces and nephews, 22 great-nieces and nephews, and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
Antonio was predeceased by his grandparents, parents Marcos and Maria Rodriguez, his brother Marcos V. Rodriguez Jr., his nephew Gabriel Rodriguez, and his great-great-niece, E'nevah Phillips. Though they have passed, their spirits live on in his heart and the hearts of those who loved him.
