August 30, 1946 — July 8, 2026

Anthony Robert McCauley, affectionately known as Tony, passed away peacefully in his home on July 8, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on August 30, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, Tony lived a life full of love, laughter, and service to others. The beloved son of James and Peggy McCauley, Tony was preceded in death by his parents, his cherished sons Marc and Robert, his devoted brothers David and Charles, and his dear nephew Timothy. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth and kindness, treasured by his surviving siblings Joseph (and wife Cindy), Catherine, and Donna. He will be missed by his numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and countless friends who were touched by his generous spirit. Tony graduated from Toledo Libby High School in 1964 and soon after, found himself serving his country in the U.S. Army. Stationed in Europe during the 1960s, Tony had the opportunity to explore some of his favorite places, including Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, and Cyprus and he continued to live in France for a short while after his time in the Army was complete. After returning to Ohio, Tony dedicated himself to his work at Major Laundry in Toledo, the Pilliod Cabinet Company in Swanton, and Swanton Welding and Machine, where he forged lasting relationships and contributed diligently to each endeavor. Tony was an avid supporter of the Swanton community, known for his active involvement in youth sports. He coached football, girls' basketball, and girls' softball, and was a familiar face at Bulldog football, basketball, and softball games. His commitment extended to being the scoreclock operator for the girls' varsity and JV basketball teams and assisting with the boys' basketball games. He was also an ASA and USSSA umpire and officiated games for all ages in both baseball and softball. An avid sports fan, Tony supported the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and was a loyal follower of the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. His greatest passion, however, was hockey. A devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Tony admired Gordie Howe and proudly cheered for his nephews who played the sport. As a youth, Tony was a very accomplished competitive swimmer, and he also worked as a lifeguard. His skill in swimming was near dominant as he would regularly win adult events as a pre-teen and teenager. His ability in the Backstroke earned him a birth as an alternate for the United States Olympic team in 1960 at the incredible age of 14. Tony was also a voracious reader, with a keen interest in biographies, true crime, and history. He loved music, especially the Rolling Stones and Hank Williams. His quick wit and humor were legendary, providing solace and laughter in even the most challenging times. Tony believed in the power of a good laugh to bring people together and lighten the burdens of life. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Tony's life at a memorial service on August 1, 2026, from2:00 - 4:00PM at Habegger Funeral Services, located at 2001 Consaul St., Toledo, Ohio, 45605.
