Anthony J. Bender October 28, 1971 - April 29, 2026 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Anthony "Tony/Chico" Bender on April 29, 2026, at the age of 54. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Tony spent his formative years in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where he first discovered his passions for sports, education, and the boundless joy of competition. Tony was the beloved son of Keith Bender(partner Joan) and the late Loretta Bender (Podesta). He was preceded in death by his cherished grandparents, Joe and Eleanora Bender, and Jim and Melba Podesta, whose love and wisdom shaped his early years. Tony's academic and athletic journey began at McCoy High School in Medicine Hat, Alberta, to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he excelled both in the classroom and on the baseball diamond. His drive and determination earned him a Bachelor's degree, and he later pursued further education, achieving a Master's degree from St. Catherine's University in St. Paul, Minnesota. A dedicated teacher and coach, Tony left a lasting mark on the communities he served throughout various school districts in Minnesota. His students and athletes remember him for his welcoming smile, his encouraging words, and his unwavering belief in their potential. Tony had a remarkable ability to connect with people of all ages, fostering an environment of kindness and generosity that touched countless lives. Tony's competitive spirit was a defining characteristic, one that he carried with him throughout his life. A three-sport athlete in high school, Tony's love for baseball led him to the collegiate level, and later found expression in the softball leagues of Duluth, Minnesota. In recent years, he turned his competitive nature toward the golf course, where he found camaraderie and joy among friends. Tony is survived by his beloved children, Koby Bender (Regan) of Bismarck, ND, Kade Bender of Cloquet, MN, and Kiana Bender (Tim Pokornowski) of Esko, MN, who were the light of his life. He also leaves behind his brother, Aaron "Bubba" Bender (Jessie) of Gurney, WI, and sister, Melissa Bender of Medicine Hat, Alberta. His partner, Jennifer Stavely of Moose Lake, MN, stood by him with unwavering support, as did the mother of his children, Brenda Gigliotti. Tony's lifelong friend, Troy Thieman (Susan) of Alberta, shared many cherished memories with him. Tony was a loving uncle to his nieces, Adara, Darian, and Olivia, and nephews, Dante (Lindsey), Brayden, and Rylan, who will miss his playful spirit and heartfelt guidance. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating Tony's life on Saturday May 9, 2026 4:00PM at Buffalo House (2590 Guss Rd Duluth, MN). It will be a gathering to remember the laughter, the lessons, and the love that Tony shared with all who knew him. Though Tony's life was marked by the struggle with mental health/alcoholism, he is remembered not for the battles he faced, but for the courage, kindness, and compassion he showed every day. These struggles never defined the depth of his character. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched, and his legacy of generosity and love will continue to inspire us all.
