Anthony Douglas Gilmour

November 5, 1966 — September 12, 2026

Anthony Douglas Gilmour, also known as "Tone Capone" in the music world, passed away on September 12, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished and the music that defined his remarkable life. Born on November 5, 1966, in Berkeley, California, Anthony's legacy is one woven with deep creativity, resilience, and love. Anthony was the beloved son of the late James Douglas Gilmour and Ethel Edith Conner Gist. He was preceded in death by his cherished grandmother Elnora Conner, both of his parents, and his dear big brother Terence Gist. Anthony’s memory will forever be treasured by his children, Sophia Guerra and Antonino Gilmour; his siblings Trinette Gist Skinner (& husband Hilton Skinner), Durand Gist (& wife Venus Gist), Channa Gist; and a host of nephews and nieces who adored him. A proud alumnus of Berkeley High School, Anthony's passion for music led him to become a pioneering force in the West Coast hip-hop scene. Tone Capone lent his unique “mobb music” sound and visionary production skills to some of the most iconic artists of his time. He was instrumental in shaping the career of the Luniz, whose 1995 certified platinum hit "I Got 5 on It" enjoyed global recognition and soared to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. “I Got 5 On It” resurfaced in a slow, eerie remix for Jordan Peele’s 2019 horror film “Us” and was featured in Joe Talbot’s 2019 drama film “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” Tone also worked with legends such as SWV, Celly Cel, Mac Dre, E-40, Too $hort, 3XKrazy, The Jacka, and many more. His influence extended beyond the West Coast as he collaborated with Southern icons like Scarface and Devin the Dude. Tone produced Scarface’s 1997 certified gold hit "Smile," featuring Tupac Shakur, which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite his legendary public persona, Anthony faced his personal health challenges with quiet dignity. Diagnosed in 2017 with heart failure and end-stage renal disease (on dialysis), he battled privately and courageously for nine years. His strength and perseverance were a testament to his character, inspiring those who knew him well. Beyond his award winning musical achievements, Anthony was a devoted father, brother, and friend. His humor and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. Gatherings with family and friends were filled with laughter, music, and joy. As we say goodbye to Anthony Douglas Gilmour, we remember a life lived with passion, courage, and an unwavering love for family, friends and music. His spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of those he touched and in the beats of the music he left behind!

Why

I asked God, “Why did you take him so soon, when he was so good?” And he answered, “Because he finished the assignment I gave him faster than the rest. The world wasn’t worthy of him, so I brought him home.” I asked again, “But why didn’t you give him more time to live?” And he said, “Because I had to save him from the pain that was coming. You see death as a tragedy, I see it as a rescue.” Still struggling I asked, “Then why does it have to hurt this much? Why leave me here with all this sadness and grief? And he answered, “Grief is just love with nowhere to go. The depth of your pain is proof of the depth of the blessing I gave you.” Finally I asked, “So how am I supposed to walk this earth without his light?” And he said, “You don’t. You absorb his light and carry it forward. He isn’t in your past, he’s waiting in the future.”

Acknowledgement

The family would like to acknowledge Anthony’s nephew, Kenneth Pitts II, whose daily care this past summer made his difficult days easier to face.
