February 8, 1931 — June 28, 2026
Ann Marie Mills, beloved matriarch and cherished friend, peacefully departed this world on June 28, 2026, at her home in Ripley, TN, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, love, and generosity that touched the lives of all who knew her. Born on February 8, 1931, in Ripley, TN, Ann was the cherished daughter of the late Montell and Alma (Salisbury) Smith. Her life was a testament to the strength of family, the joy of simple pleasures, and the power of unconditional love.
Ann was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 52 years, Ray Mills, with whom she shared a life filled with love and partnership as they farmed side by side. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Karen Dean Caldwell, her son, Donald Van Mills, and her three brothers, John William Smith, Don Smith, and Jerry Smith. Despite the profound losses she endured, Ann's spirit remained unbowed, her heart ever open and her arms ever welcoming.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Dianne Garrett, of Waterville, OH, and her five adoring grandchildren: Brad Garrett of OH, Lindsay (Ben) Hoipkemier of OH, Alecia (Marcus) West of Jackson, TN, April (Dustin) Apperson of Ripley, TN, and Rae Marie Mills of AR. Ann's legacy of love continues through her twenty-four great-grandchildren, each a testament to the enduring family bonds she cherished and nurtured.
Ann's life was defined by her roles as a devoted homemaker, a partner in farming with her husband, and a nurturing presence in the lives of her family and community. She was a gifted seamstress, her hands crafting garments and quilts that warmed the bodies and hearts of those she loved. Ann's joy in life was found in the outdoors, whether walking through the fields she helped cultivate or traveling to the mountains or beaches, savoring the beauty of the world around her.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Ann knew her as "Grandmama" or "Granny," titles she wore with pride and warmth. Her home was a haven of delicious meals, lively conversation, and the comforting presence of a woman who lived to give, expecting nothing in return. Ann was a remarkable cook, her kitchen a place where flavors mingled with laughter and the love of family, creating memories that will be cherished by all who gathered there.
Ann's life will be celebrated on July 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Marys Chapel Baptist Church, located at 279 Marys Chapel Rd., Ripley, TN 38063.
