Andre William Payne
August 11, 1967 — May 8, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Andre William Payne, a beloved son, nephew, cousin, and friend, who departed this world unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on May 8, 2026, at the age of 58. Born on August 11, 1967, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Andre was a beacon of warmth, humor, and kindness, whose life was a testament to resilience and love.
Andre was the cherished son of Brenda Carol Payne and the late James Adams. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents William and Marieda Payne, and his uncle Alfred Barlow. He is survived by his devoted mother, Brenda Payne of Blacklick, Ohio, and his special Aunt Betty Payne of Reynoldsburg, Ohio. His Uncle Kenneth (Cheryl) LaMar, and first cousins Michele (Tony) Thomas of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Carolyn (Craig) Groves of Pickerington, Ohio, and Dana Barlow of Blacklick, Ohio, also mourn his loss. Andre's life was enriched by a host of relatives, life-long family friends, and a special bond with Sharon Allen and close friend Ricky Hughes.
Andre's educational journey began in the parochial schools of Philadelphia. His thirst for learning led him to the Job Corps Program in Maryland, where he earned his high school diploma and vocational training in welding. This foundation paved the way for a fulfilling career with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), where Andre proudly served for 27 years. He began as a conductor on the Regional Rail and later operated buses and trolleys throughout the Greater Philadelphia area, retiring in 2015. His work was more than a career; it was a calling that allowed him to touch countless lives with his gregarious nature and his gift for conversation.
As a young boy, Andre found joy in attending wrestling matches with his mother, cheering fervently for his favorite wrestler, Andre the Giant. His love for sports continued throughout his life, with a particular passion for football and unwavering loyalty to the Philadelphia Eagles. Listening to sports radio was his daily entertainment, a way to stay connected with the games and the players he admired.
Andre's culinary preferences were simple yet filled with nostalgia, favoring his grandmother's fried chicken and his Aunt Betty's potato salad. These dishes, like his life, were seasoned with love and tradition.
Despite the challenges he faced, including severe diabetes that led to the amputation of his leg in 2014 and a significant reduction in his vision, Andre's spirit remained unbroken. His resilience was nurtured at the Providence Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, where he became a long-term resident. Even in adversity, Andre's warm-hearted nature and genuine interest in others never wavered.
A service celebrating Andre's life will be held on June 4, 2026, at Caliman Funeral Services. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.
Andre William Payne lived a life full of love, laughter, and unyielding courage. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, the memories of his generous spirit and infectious smile will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in eternal peace.
