Amy Lavonne Thames
October 27, 1930 — October 28, 2026
Celebrating the remarkable life of Amy Lavonne Thames, we are filled with gratitude and love as we remember a woman whose spirit touched all who knew her. Born on October 27, 1930, in Summerfield, Louisiana, to Eslie Thomas Tanner and Lela Ethel Brown Tanner, Lavonne lived a life rich in love, faith, and service.
Lavonne was a bright light from an early age, achieving the honor of Valedictorian of her Senior Class. She pursued her education further by attending business school, which laid the foundation for her successful career. Lavonne dedicated many years as a Loan Officer at Bridge City State Bank, where her integrity and kindness left a lasting impact.
Her life was a testament to her faith and her commitment to her community. As a devoted member of Fairdale Baptist Church, Lavonne led the Ladies Sunday School class for many years, nurturing both the spiritual and educational growth of her community. Her passion for education was evident in her dedication to securing scholarship funds for local school graduates. It is a fitting tribute that the church’s scholarship fund now bears her name—the Lavonne Thames Scholarship Fund.
Lavonne's love for travel saw her explore all but one of the United States, and her nurturing spirit was evident in her numerous and lovingly tended flower beds and seasonal gardens. Above all, she was known as a dedicated prayer warrior, offering her prayers and support to her family, church, and all who sought her solace.
Lavonne was predeceased by her parents, Eslie and Lela Tanner; her brothers, Howard and Thelton Tanner; her beloved husbands, Tommy Vail of 44 years and Jess Thames of 13 years; and her cherished daughter, Janet Race. She leaves behind a legacy cherished by her daughter, Dianne Hale, and husband Mike of Hemphill; her son, Don Vale, and wife Polly of Streetman, Texas; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Lavonne's life will be held at Fairdale Baptist Church, located at 4820 Fairdale Rd., Hemphill, Texas 75948, on October 30, 2026, at 3:00 PM.
In honoring Lavonne's memory, her family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Fairdale Baptist Church, with a notation for the Lavonne Thames Scholarship Fund, or to a charity of your choice.
Lavonne's life was a beacon of love and devotion, and her legacy will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with those she loved so dearly.
