It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Alzie Werner, who departed from this world peacefully at his home on February 14, 2026, after bravely facing pancreatic cancer. Born on December 23, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, Alzie was a beacon of warmth, kindness, and resilience whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Alzie was predeceased by his loving parents, his cherished sister Katherine, his dear brother Donnie, and many lifelong friends who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, embodied by his devoted spouse, Joanie, with whom he shared 28 wonderful years of marriage, having wed on June 24, 2006. Together, they raised three beautiful daughters—Rachel, Heaven, and Jennifer—who were the pride of his life. He is also survived by his caring niece, Jana Oldfather, and his nephews, Chad Gibson and Jason Birks, as well as six beloved grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit of generosity and joy.
A dedicated professional, Alzie devoted 40 years to Shell USA Incorporated, where he was admired not only for his work ethic but also for his ability to bring a smile to his colleagues' faces. After retiring to his home in Wood River, Illinois, he embraced his passions with relentless enthusiasm. An avid Harley motorcycle rider, Alzie participated in numerous charity runs for St. Jude's, embodying his lifelong commitment to helping others. His love for the open road was matched by his fondness for fishing, horseback riding, camping, and floating, with cherished memories of rides to Sturgis and beyond. Alzie's collection of oil lamps was a testament to his appreciation for history and craftsmanship, each piece a reflection of his eclectic tastes.
More than his hobbies, it was Alzie's compassionate nature and infectious humor that endeared him to all. Known for his warm and caring demeanor, he had an unparalleled gift for making everyone feel welcome, always ready with a helping hand and a hearty laugh. His life was a tapestry of meaningful relationships and selfless acts, woven together by a spirit that knew no bounds.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Hospice for their compassionate care, easing Alzie's transition and providing comfort in his final moments. In accordance with his wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor his memory.
As we bid farewell to a remarkable man, we find solace in the countless memories he leaves behind—a testament to a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering kindness. In the words of those who loved him, Alzie's spirit will forever ride alongside us, guiding us with his light and love.
