Obituary of Alvin Thompson February 3, 1927 – June 16, 2026 Alvin Thompson, affectionately known by many as "Daddy, Granddaddy, Gook, Buckshot, Pinky," and other loving names, peacefully entered eternal rest on June 16, 2026, at the age of 98. In the comfort of his home, he left this world having lived a rich and fulfilling life of love, service, and dedication. Born on February 3, 1927, in Columbia, South Carolina, Alvin’s journey began in a small, tight-knit community where he would grow to touch countless lives. Alvin was the eldest of seven siblings and was predeceased by his beloved brothers and sisters: Ledmon, Vernon, Bernice, Joyce, Patricia, and Elizabeth. Raised by a young, nurturing mother, Alvin learned responsibility at an early age. Foregoing his formal education after grade school, he chose to support his family, a decision that would define his character and instill a deep sense of duty and selflessness that he carried throughout his life. On April 5, 1947, in Statesboro, Georgia, Alvin married the love of his life, Maude Thompson. Their marriage of seventy-nine years was not only a testament to their commitment but also a beacon of enduring love and faith. Together, they built a family rooted in strong values and unwavering faith. Alvin and Maude cherished their family, and their love story remains a cherished legacy, with a milestone eighty-year anniversary just on the horizon. As a master mechanic, Alvin had an unparalleled gift for anything mechanical. His passion for cars was legendary, and he was renowned for his ability to repair and rebuild almost anything with an engine. Alvin’s garage and workshop were more than just places of work; they were spaces where knowledge was passed down, problems were solved, and memories were made. His skills were unmatched, and his family often joked that he could build a car from scratch. A devoted member of his church, Alvin’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He served diligently on the Trustee Board, sang in the Men's Choir and Hymn Choir, and actively participated in the Brotherhood Ministry. His dedication to God and his congregation earned him the affectionate title of "The Father of the Church." His wisdom, leadership, and unwavering faith made him a respected figure within his community. Alvin is survived by his beloved wife, Maude, as well as a large and loving family that includes 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his legacy of love and integrity. His life was marked by service, sacrifice, faith, and love. As a caring uncle, loyal cousin, trusted friend, and respected community leader, Alvin’s influence spanned generations. His hands built, repaired, and provided, while his heart nurtured and protected. His wisdom guided those around him, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. A service to honor Alvin’s life will be held on June 27, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Zion Baptist Church, located at 801 Washington Street, Columbia, SC. Family, friends, and community members are invited to gather in celebration of Alvin’s remarkable life and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alvin’s cherished church, Zion Baptist Church, in his memory. His spirit will forever be a guiding light for those who knew and loved him.
