Alva was educated in the Philadelphia school system and graduated in 1963 from John Bartram HS. She later pursued her education at Pierce and Wharton Business School's. Her career later took shape as she worked for the United States State Department in the Passport Agency for 40 years. She proudly retired in 2006 (her passport was stamped!).

She was a member of James Varick AME Zion Church and loved her church family. At Varick she served in several capacities. As a youth she was active in various programs. As an adult she sang with the Senior and Gospel choirs, was an Usher, the Director of Children, President of the Young Adult Christian Ushers, an original member of The Daughters of Miriam praise dance team, and member of the Women's Homes and Overseas Missionary Society. With Hall United Methodist Church of Glen Burnie, MD (her sister, Arleathea's church) she volunteered and was a participant with Vacation Bible School.
Her utmost joy was sending cards to family and friends on every occasion. She would never forget your birthday.
Alva is preceded in death by her parents, Alvah J. Walston, Sr. and Yvonne C. Walston; three sisters, Rose Marie Nelson, Doris Jean (William Arthur) Johnson, and Yvonne Chester (Wardell) Williams; and one brother, Aubrey C. Chester. She is survived by her two daughters, Natalie Walston and Annette C. Noelcin (Romann). Her grandchildren, Amanda Walston, Amarre Mayo, and Aiden Noelcin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She has extended and expressed her kindness and love to the following people: Marina Katsnelson, MD, Todd Fleischman, DMD, Jennifer Davis (Jamir, Quincy and Destiny), Brandon Beaver (Nina and Micki), Courtney Holcomb, and Gwen Tunnell, and Dontez Jolly.
May she rest in eternal peace and ever lasting love.
