Obituary of Alton Charles Davis It is with profound sadness and yet a deep sense of gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Alton Charles Davis, who departed this world on June 1, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on June 30, 1940, in the quaint town of Gladewater, Texas, Alton was the beloved son of Watson Davis Jr. and Allie Wilson Davis. He was a cherished brother to Mary Davis Powell, Effella Davis Lockett, Vernice Davis Simon, Elnita Davis, Annie Davis Butller, William Douglas Davis, George Calvin Davis, and James Donnell Davis, all of whom predeceased him. Alton's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering love for family and community. He is survived by his devoted sister, Jackie Davis Morgan, 4 awesome children as well as 11 adoring grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy of love and kindness. Alton's educational path began at Weldon High School in Gladewater, Texas, where he graduated in 1959. His love for biology was only matched by his passion for music, a talent that earned him a music scholarship to Drake University. However, life had other plans, and Alton chose to serve his country, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1962. As a Commercial Transportation Specialist, he reached the rank of E-4 and was honored with the Good Conduct Medal. His service aboard the C-130, C-141, and C-5 aircraft allowed him the unique opportunity to travel to over 30 countries, broadening his perspective and deepening his appreciation for the world's diversity. After his military service, Alton embarked on a long and fulfilling career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked from 1962 to 1995, first as a supervisor and later as a letter carrier. His commitment to service did not end with retirement; Alton felt a calling to return to work and became a beloved school bus driver from 1996 to 2025. His rapport with the children was heartwarming, as he inspired them to learn something new every day, eagerly listening to their discoveries. Alton's faith was an integral part of his life. For over 45 years, he was a dedicated member of the Concord Church, serving as a Deacon and participating in the male chorus, mass choir, food pantry, count team, and as a bus driver. His community involvement extended to the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 240, where he continued to serve those who, like him, had dedicated their lives to the nation. A man of many interests, Alton was passionate about piano music and took lessons until a surgery on his hand curtailed his practice. He enjoyed the camaraderie found at Wel Med, where he played ping pong and shot pool. His love for exploration took him on many travels, and he was a frequent attendee of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. High School Football was another of his passions, and he was a devoted supporter of the Duncanville Panthers. Alton's life was characterized by kindness, generosity, and a readiness to help anyone in need. His warmth and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him. In 1990, at the Concord Church, he found his soulmate Elaine Sims and they became one on April 27, 1991, sharing a life filled with love, laughter, and mutual support. As we bid farewell to Alton, we celebrate a life that was rich in love, service, and unwavering faith. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide all those who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Concord Church Food Pantry or the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 240, as Alton would have wished to continue supporting the causes close to his heart.
