It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alma Kunes, a deeply cherished soul, on May 22, 2026. Alma departed this world peacefully in her sleep at Ridgeway Nursing Home after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Born on October 19, 1939, in the charming town of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Alma was the beloved daughter of Mary and Henderson Shanklin. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Bob Kunes, her dear brother Robert Shanklin, and his wife Alice. Her parents, Mary and Henderson, preceded her in death as well, leaving Alma to carry on their legacy of kindness and strength.
Alma’s life was enriched by her enduring and loving relationships. She is survived by her sister, Diane Bell, and her brothers, Van and David Shanklin, who cherished her deeply. Alma was a treasured aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, and her circle of close friends was vast, as she touched the lives of many with her warmth and humor.
In 1965, Alma graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary, embarking on a journey that would lead her to a rewarding career as a social worker. Her work focused primarily on aiding those affected by Multiple Sclerosis, a role she embraced with genuine compassion and dedication. Alma’s commitment to her work was a testament to her caring nature, and she was greatly admired for her ability to bring comfort and support to those in need.
Alma's faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was recently a member of Farmers Christian Church in Morehead, Kentucky, and spent many years as an active member of Willowcreek Christian Church in Victor, New York. Her involvement in these communities reflected her deep spirituality and her desire to serve others.
A woman of many interests, Alma was an avid reader who found joy in the stories and knowledge books offered. She also had a passion for making jewelry, a craft that allowed her to express her creativity and share her love for beauty with those around her.
Known for her great sense of humor, Alma had a zest for life that was infectious. Her kindness and warmth made her a friend to many, and her ability to brighten any room with her laughter and genuine interest in others was a gift to all who knew her.
A service celebrating Alma’s remarkable life will be held on June 6, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Farmers Christian Church, located at 100 Highway 801 South, Morehead, KY 40351. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Farmers Christian Church, a community that held a special place in Alma's heart.
