With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Allan Terhune, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on May 14, 2026, at his home in Lakewood, NJ. Born on September 19, 1953, Allan lived a life marked by love, dedication, and a boundless passion for the sea.
Allan was the cherished son of Richard Terhune and Sophie Kirk, and he was predeceased by his dear sister, Katherine Terhune Fullmer. His legacy continues through his devoted wife, Lauren, whom he married at St Barnabas Church in Bayville, NJ, on November 26, 1976. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership, spanning nearly five decades. Allan is also survived by his children, Allan Jr. and his wife Catherine Muller-Terhune, and Kristen Troup and her husband Aaron, both residing in Annapolis, MD. His grandchildren, Cameron, Rory, Emerson, Fletcher, and Brenton, will forever hold dear the lessons and laughter their grandfather imparted.
Allan's life was a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of education, career, and passion. A proud graduate of Wardlaw Country Day School, where he excelled as a varsity athlete, Allan furthered his education with a Bachelor’s Degree from Gettysburg College. He began his professional journey as a dedicated math and science teacher at Toms River Middle School East, where he also shared his love for sports as a basketball coach. It was during this time that he laid the foundations for his entrepreneurial venture, "Gutter Specialists," which evolved into the successful ATCO (Allan Terhune Company).
Beyond his professional achievements, Allan was a cornerstone of the sailing community, a lifelong member of both the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) and Toms River Yacht Club. His leadership as Commodore of these esteemed organizations reflected his unwavering commitment to the yachting world. Allan's passion for sailing was profound; he was an avid competitor in classes such as the M Scow, Lightning, E Scow, Flying Scot, and Ensign, and his competitive spirit shone brightly as he campaigned his J/29 "Windekind" along the East Coast, earning accolades and respect.
Allan was a man of character, known for his ability to listen and engage in thoughtful debate. His friends and family admired his dedication to personal responsibility and his relentless pursuit of improvement. Allan's presence was a source of strength and wisdom—qualities that made him a pillar in the lives of those who knew him.
A service to honor Allan's remarkable life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Toms River Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association, in honor of Allan's lifelong love for sailing and the sea, at https://bbyra.org/donate.
As we celebrate Allan Terhune, Sr.'s life, we remember a man whose legacy will sail through the hearts and memories of all who knew him. His spirit will forever guide us like the gentle winds of Barnegat Bay that he so passionately embraced.
