Alice Miller

Alice Miller, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 94 due to complications from a stroke. Born on April 25, 1932, in the charming town of Snow Hill, North Carolina, Alice was the cherished daughter of Celestia Dunn and William Rouse. Her life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. Alice's journey led her to New York City, where she married the love of her life, Elmer L. Miller, in April 1956. Together, they built a beautiful family, and though Elmer and their daughter Rhonni Lynn Miller predeceased her, Alice's legacy continues to shine through her surviving children, Robin Miller-Garrett and Lori Miller. Her grandchildren, Lemar Garrett, Tyler Garrett, and Kyle Garrett, along with her great-granddaughter, Soleil Evette Garrett, brought immense joy and fulfillment to her later years. A devoted and compassionate nurse, Alice dedicated 45 years of her life to caring for others. She graduated from high school and earned her RN nursing degree from the Harlem School of Nursing, embarking on a career that saw her serve at institutions like the VA Hospital, Hillcrest General Hospital, Elmhurst Hospital, and the NYC Department of Corrections Queens House of Detention. Alice retired in 1998 from the Margaret Tietz Center for Nursing Care, where she was celebrated for her commitment to patient care and professional excellence. Alice's commitment to service extended beyond her professional life. She was a lifelong member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, embracing her faith with dedication both in the St. Albans congregation and, during her time in Connecticut, at the Bridgeport congregation. Her faith was a guiding light, and she held steadfast to the belief in the hope of resurrection, as she often quoted, "I have hope toward God... that there is going to be a resurrection." In addition to her faith, Alice was an enthusiastic supporter of the New York Mets, finding joy and camaraderie in following her favorite baseball team. Her compassionate nature and belief in treating everyone with dignity and respect left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her siblings, Eva Gray Morris and Nellie Robinson, and her numerous nieces and nephews, including Larry Hooks, Jay Rouse, Brenda Hooks, Joan Koonce, Ann Moore, and Celeste Croom, fondly remember her as a beacon of fairness and love. A service in celebration of Alice's life will be held on September 12, 2026, at 21:11, at the St. Albans Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, located at 205-00 Linden Boulevard, St. Albans, NY 11412. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Scleroderma Research Foundation, honoring Alice's memory and her spirit of giving. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shown support and love during this time. Alice's warmth, compassion, and unwavering kindness will forever be cherished, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know her.
