Alice French Kurs

April 28, 1926 — October 28, 2026

Alice French Kurs, a remarkable woman of wisdom, talent, and boundless curiosity, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2026, at the century mark of 100 years, in the comfort of her residence at Ginger Cove. Born on April 28, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, Alice was the daughter of August and Dagmar (Vojan) French. She grew up in Whiting, Indiana where her father was a chemist with Standard Oil. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis N. Kurs, and her brothers, George (fraternal twin) and Richard French. Alice's journey through life was one marked by a strong thirst for knowledge and a profound dedication to education. She was the Valedictorian of her high school class and won a full scholarship to the University of Chicago. She earned dual degrees in Philosophy and Chemistry, and later, expanded her intellectual pursuits with a Master of Arts in Liberal Education from St. John's College. Her academic accomplishments were not merely about personal achievement; they were the foundation for a lifelong commitment to teaching and inspiring others. For 15 years, Alice was a dedicated math teacher at Annapolis Senior High School, where she left an indelible mark on countless students. Beyond her teaching career, Alice embraced her creative side, taking classes in art and becoming an accomplished printmaker specializing in etchings. She also practised the art of bookbinding, binding and restoring books for friends and family. She taught classes at the YMCA and worked at the St. John's College library bindery. Music was another of Alice's lifelong passions. She played viola with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra for 30 years, attending music camps in the off-season. She continued to share her musical talents by participating in local chamber music groups. Her artistic endeavors extended into the realm of fiber arts as well; Alice was an accomplished seamstress and a lifelong weaver. Resourceful and inquisitive, Alice approached life with a competitive spirit and the practical attitude of a consummate Girl Scout. She was generous with her time and knowledge, always eager to explore new ideas and share in the joys of discovery. Her travels enriched her experiences and deepened her connection to the world around her. Alice's vibrant life is celebrated by her four children: Claire Kurs (Pascal Gambardella), Jean Blair (Jim), Eleanor Verdi (John), and Elizabeth Soeder (Hans). She was a loving grandmother to Daniel, Peter, Antonia, Luca, Gustav, Johann, and Armin, who will carry forward her legacy of curiosity and kindness. Her presence will be profoundly missed by the Annapolis community, where she was an active member of the Chesapeake Weavers Guild and an enthusiastic participant in five community book clubs. Alice will be remembered for the countless gatherings at her home where she was known as a welcoming hostess and an excellent cook. In her later years, Alice struggled with age-related macular degeneration and was always hopeful that a cure would be found.
