In Loving Memory of Alfred Joseph Newman It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Alfred J. Newman, a cherished brother and beloved friend, who left this world on July 8, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on September 28, 1950, in Washington, D.C., Alfred was the last of eight children born to William F. and Dorothy E. Nelson Newman. Alfred was a proud graduate of McKinley High School in D.C. where he built the foundation of a lifetime of learning and growth. A man of faith, he was confirmed at Saint George's Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C., a congregation close to his heart and one that his grandparents and parents helped establish, imbuing his life with a strong spiritual sense that guided him in all his endeavors. Alfred dedicated his entire career to the United States Postal Service, where he found purpose and fulfillment in his work. He spent his days navigating the roads in delivery vans and 18-wheel trucks ensuring the timely delivery of letters and packages. His colleagues knew him as a reliable and diligent worker, and his dedication to his profession was unmatched. Outside of his professional life, Alfred was a man of varied interests and passions. He was an avid sports enthusiast and a devoted Washington Nationals season ticketholder, relishing the thrill of the game and the camaraderie of fellow fans. His love for sports extended beyond the stands, as he participated in activities such as cycling, golf, bowling, swimming, and motorcycling. Alfred's daily long walks were a testament to his zest for life and love of the outdoors. Alfred loved beer, but beer did not love him. It was a struggle. He routinely fussed with his female doctor and complained about using "air mayonnaise" but Alfred kept his health numbers down. Alfred was deeply connected to his family. Despite his appreciation for alone time, his siblings regularly interrupted his marathon all types of sports-viewing sessions with long, loving phone calls, a testament to the close-knit bond they shared. Each of his surviving siblings: sisters Dorothy Jeanne, Ohio; Shirley A., New York, and Lynette G., Maryland, and brothers William F. II, Maryland; Arthur J., Maryland, and James H., Virginia will forever hold him in their hearts, cherishing memories and the love they shared. Alfred is now reunited with his parents, his oldest sister Frances E. Washington, and his grandparents, where he walks eternally with angels and sits at the right hand of his Lord and Savior. A memorial service to celebrate Alfred's life will be held on August 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and honor of a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. George's Episcopal Church, in memory of Alfred and his parents and grandparents reflecting his spirit of kindness and generosity. Alfred's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
